Spanish and Italian languages
Margaret was born in Valparaiso, Chile. She completed her high school years in her home town before commencing a degree in Mathematics at the University of Chile. In 1969 an opportunity arose to come to Australia to study English and she emigrated to Australia.
She lived initially in Sydney and Perth where she married. In 1973 Margaret travelled with her husband for one year throughout South America and then settled in Wollongong where her two sons were born.
In 1981 she enrolled in the Department of European Languages at the University of Wollongong and completed a double major in French and Italian. She also studied German at the University of New England since there was no German offered in Wollongong at that time.
After completing her Diploma in Education she was offered a position as a language teacher at Smiths Hill High School where she taught German, Italian, French and Spanish until she retired.
For a five year period Margaret also worked as a lecturer of Diploma of Education at the University of Wollongong.
With a repertoire of languages to her credit, Margaret came to the WEA Illawarra in 1996 and has been tutoring in the Leisure Skills program in both Italian and Spanish ever since.
In her spare time Margaret loves to travel, read and being with her family and friends but confided that she loves teaching languages most of all.
Mary Monteleone
Leisure Skills / Pottery
Mary Monteleone
Leisure Skills / Pottery
Mary has been with the WEA Illawarra as a pottery tutor since 2001 and has taught hundreds of students the art of pottery. Many of her students come back each term to refine their skills and create wonderful works of art for their family and friends.
Mary says that the best part of her job is teaching students the basics of clay and watching each person’s creativity grow and develop. She loves to see everyone’s individuality express itself in their pieces. Students always tell her that, even if they’ve had a bad day at work, coming to class allows all their stresses and worries to fade away as they use their hands to create with the clay.
Mary’s courses have now been extended to include a Creative Kids program which caters to children aged between 8 – 14 years. Kids attending these classes are also getting hooked on the creativity of pottery and are returning term after term to learn more skills!
