Work Skills Funding

Sometimes the biggest barrier to learning new skills or gaining a qualification is the lack of money to simply study. With WEA Illawarra you can improve your opportunities through subsidised courses and training. We offer many funding opportunities for you as an adult learners.

Smart and Skilled

Smart and Skilled is a reform of the NSW Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. It’s helping people in NSW get the skills they need to find a job and advance their careers. WEA Illawarra can provide access to a range of funded courses that will develop your skills and knowledge to improve your work skills.

Courses are available from 3 Smart and Skilled initiatives:

  • Foundation skills – vocational language, literacy and numeracy and digital literacy that will assist you become job-ready
  • Entitlement to government-subsidised training up to and including Certificate III
  • Government funding for higher-level courses (Certificate IV and above) in targeted priority areas.

Eligibility
To be eligible for Smart and Skilled, participants need to be:

  • 15 years old or over
  • living or working in NSW
  • no longer at school
  • an Australian Citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand Citizen.

Home schooled students may also meet eligibility guidelines.

ACE Funding

As an NSW Adult and Community Education (ACE) provider, WEA Illawarra can offer funding towards training up to and including Certificate III level.

The ACE program is designed to assist disadvantaged students, and those in regional and remote communities across NSW who experience significant barriers to training and employment. ACE funding can be used to provide intensive support to assist eligible students to overcome these barriers.

Adult and Community Education is a pathway program that helps students access further training, increase community participation, find employment, or advance their careers.

Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for the ACE program, participants need to be:

  • 15 years old or over
  • Living or working in NSW
  • No longer at school
  • An Australian Citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand Citizen.

Targeted Skills for Small Business

The ACE Program will also offer support to small business owners and their staff by providing fully subsidised accredited and non-accredited training in targeted courses in information technology, business services or foundation skills.

This category is referred to as Targeted Skills for Small Business (TSB).

Eligibility criteria
For students to be eligible under TSB, the student must be:
(a) an owner of a small business: or
(b) an employee of a small business or not-for-profit organisation.

A small business is defined as a business with 20 employees or less.

Traineeships

Vocational education and training (VET) provides people with the workplace skills and technical knowledge they need to meet current and future employment demands.

Traineeships allow business to employ staff who will gain a nationally recognised qualification while they are working. Trainees are supported through flexible workplace visits and or classroom attendance with a dedicated trainer throughout the term of their traineeship. The NSW Government is currently providing fee-free training for traineeships through Smart and Skilled funding.

Be Connected (over 50’s)
Be Connected is an Australian Government initiative aimed at increasing the confidence, skills and online safety of older Australians in using digital technology.

Tech Savvy Seniors (over 60’s)
Tech Savvy Seniors delivers low cost digital literacy training to seniors so they can develop the skills and confidence to access information and services online. The program provides training in computers, tablets and smart phones to help seniors to stay connected with their families, friends and communities.
